January 5, 1927 - December 26, 2011
Entered the Kingdom of Heaven on December 26, 2011. Wayne was born on January 5, 1927 in Mt. Leonard, Missouri to William and Lillie Vogelsmeier. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mt. Leonard, and was raised on a farm north of Sweet Springs, Missouri. He graduated from Malta Bend High School in June of 1944, and he enrolled at Valparaiso University. After one semester, his education was delayed as he entered the U.S. Army in early 1945. Wayne was training for the invasion of Japan when World War II ended. He served in the Army Occupation forces in Japan until his discharge in December of 1946.
Wayne continued his education at Valparaiso University where he met Lois Althaus, his future wife. Wayne graduated in 1950, and he began his teaching career at Grace Lutheran School, Wellston, Missouri. He taught fourth grade, coached, and worked with youth. On August 11, 1951, Wayne and Lois were married. Wayne taught at Grace until the fall of 1954, when he took a teaching position at Lutheran High School Central, which became Lutheran North in 1964. Wayne taught at Lutheran North until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure at North, Wayne taught physical education and social studies. He served as Athletic Director for over 25 years, coached football, baseball, field hockey and he founded the soccer program. The soccer field at Lutheran North was named in honor of Wayne and Lois in 2006. He was truly “old school”. He watered, fertilized and maintained the athletic fields at North for years. He once remarked, “I think I know every blade of grass on those fields.” In the years in which Missouri high schools played soccer in the winter, he was often seen plowing the snow off the soccer fields in below freezing temperatures before the sun rose.
Wayne also coached church softball and youth baseball, administered the Lutheran Youth League athletic programs, and umpired and officiated baseball, softball, football and youth basketball. He was honored by the St. Louis Officials Association for 50 years of officiating football. During his retirement, he was regularly in attendance at high school sporting events around St. Louis.
Lois preceded Wayne in death on February 1, 2011. Wayne and Lois had three children, Lori (Joel) Christiansen, Gregg, and Stuart (Janet), and four grandchildren, Rachel and Andrew Christiansen, and Bradley and Lauren Vogelsmeier. He loved attending his grandchildren’s athletics, music and school events. Wayne is also survived by a sister, Maxine Straight, Concordia, Missouri.
Wayne was passionate about the students he taught and the kids that he coached. He cherished 59 years of marriage with Lois. He loved his children and grandchildren. Most of all, Wayne always placed his trust in the Lord, and he was the definition of a Christian servant.
