Harold Burns, 94, passed away September 26, 2009 in Fort Smith. He was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to the late Arlie Ray and Rhoda Thomas Burns on November 7, 1914. He was an only child. He graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1933. After graduation, Harold went to work in the glass industry in Okmulgee and later worked for Harding Glass Company in Fort Smith.
In 1937, he married Irene Fox and they had three children. In 1942, he went to work for the U.S. Post Office. After working as a letter carrier for 25 years, he then moved to management until retirement in 1977. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1946. He served the church in several capacities. He was a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Treasure for over 50 years. Harold also served in WWII in Europe and was discharged in December 1945. His life was very full and he loved to travel. He served as Secretary Treasurer United Glass and Ceramic Union, President Letters Carriers Branch 399, President State Association of Letter Carriers of Arkansas, and Treasurer and Director of Sebastian Federal Employees Credit Union.
He is survived by his wife: Irene Burns and their three children: Ronny and his wife Sandy Burns, Janice and her husband Don Davis, and Carolyn and her husband Bill Maiden all of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and a host of friends..
Funeral Service will be 12:00 noon Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at the U.S. National Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Scott Maiden, Terry Davis, Randy Davis, and Justin Burns.
Family will visit with friends Monday evening from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
