Watt Parker Newman, resident of Fairfield, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011 in Gonzales, Texas at the age of 90. He was born in Fairfield on July 20, 1920 to Theodore Burton Newman and Mattie Gertrude Matthews Newman. During his high school days in Fairfield he was an accomplished athlete, competing in track (pole vault), football, and baseball. Mr. Newman served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp in the European Theatre of Operations being discharged as a Staff Sergeant. On April 12, 1947 he married Ennie Dell Looney in Fairfield and they made their home and operated Newman's Variety and Hardware Store on the courthouse square later becoming Newman's Hardware. He was a past member of the Fairfield Rotary Club and the Fairfield Lions Club, and also served on the Volunteer Fire Department in Fairfield. He was a member of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and operated Newmans RV Park in Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ennie Dell Looney Newman in 1999, brothers Joe Everett Newman who died serving his country during World War II in Germany, Bill Newman in 2002, and Burton Newman in 2008. Survivors include his children Amy Newman of Fairfield and Beth Newman of Harwood. Also surviving are nieces Charlotte Gaca and husband Lee of Corsicana and Jan Van Winkle of Corsicana.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 - 8pm at Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 11am at the Fairfield Cemetery with family and friends sharing memories of Mr. Newman.
The family ask that if so desired memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of Freestone County.
