DANTE, VIRGINIA – Charlotte Virginia Adkins Burkett, 81, left this earth and walked into heaven on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia.
She was born in Wise County, Virginia; daughter of the late Mack and Inez Johnson Adkins. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Ward “Jack” Burkett; her sister, Edith Callie Adkins Flanery; and a great granddaughter, Kristin Nicole Conley. She was raised in Dante, Virginia and lived in Bear Wallow her whole life. She moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 2001 to be close to her family when her health began to decline, but her home was still in Dante and so was her heart. She was very proud of her family and was quick to tell anyone she met about each one. She made many, many friends and would ‘adopt’ people everywhere she went. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years, devoted wife, daughter, mother, friend and care giver to those who needed her. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many, many old friends from living and growing up in Dante and by her many new friends she made while living in Charlottesville.
We couldn’t possibly mention everyone who has helped Mom regain her health, but we have to say thank you to Dr. John Densmore, with his skill as an Oncologist we got to keep Mom eight years longer than we thought we would, Dr. Ann Klecan, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Nelson, Dr. Mealon, Dr. Townsend, Dr. Topp, and the staff of 3 East and 3 West of the University of Virginia Hospital for your concern, care and professionalism. Our family will always be grateful to you all from the cafeteria personal, to the lady who cleaned the room, nurses, CAN’s, or anyone who happened to wander into her room by mistake. You all made her last days and hours easier. It’s with a grateful heart that we watched our Lord take her and for letting us have her as long as he did.
She is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Burgess of Crozet, Virginia and Jan Burkett, with whom she lived, of Charlottesville, Virginia; one son, Jackie Burkett and wife, Kathy of Troy, Virginia; three granddaughters, Tammy Wyland and husband, Buck of Crozet, Virginia, Kim Morris of Charlottesville, Virginia, and DeAnna Burkett of Troy, Virginia; four great grandchildren, Joel Steven Burgess-Taylor and MacKenzie Ashlyn of Crozet, Virginia and Madelyn and Tyler Morris of Charlottesville, Virginia; she is also leaving friends she has had her entire life including, Peggy Suits of Castlewood, Virginia, Daisy Riley of Mississippi, Ruth Gordon, Lois and Earl Jenkins all of Dante, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Walter Lump officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Family and Friends.
