CASTLEWOOD, VIRGINIA - Franklin Dale Gray, 79, died Saturday, October 22, 2011 at his home in Castlewood, Virginia.
He was born in Belfry, Kentucky; son of the late James Preston and Kate Williams Gray. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Gray. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, and friend. He was a graduate of St. Paul High School in 1951. He played half back for the Deacons and was known as "Lighting Gray." In addition, he was the St. Paul Deacons biggest fan. He was an honored coach of the girls softball team in the local community. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed hunting with his grandchildren and his son, Frank.
He is survived by five daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Rowlette and husband, Rick, of Pound, Virginia, Sandra Lee Gray of Mowequea, Illinois, Linda Dale Kiser and special friend, Ed, of Meadowview, Virginia, Betty Lou Hilton and husband Sam, of Valdese, North Carolina, and Amy Annette Gray Burke of Clintwood, Virginia; one son, Franklin Preston Gray and wife, Donna, of Marietta, Georgia; adopted son, William Robert Taylor of Castlewood, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Juanita Gray of Marietta, Georgia; eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Franklin Dale Gray will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2011 in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Virginia, with Rev. Jerry Lusk officiating. Committal Services and Interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Military Rites will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Virginia National Guard. Family and Friends will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery leaving at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers will be J.R. Holt, Brent Kiser, Christopher Gray, Richard Stevens, Jonathan Gray, and Joey Statzer. Honorary Pallbearers will be Keith Gobble, Raymond Frost, James Gray, Dan Williams, Lincoln Puckett, and many other special family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 24, 2011 in Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia. The family would like to give a Special Thanks to Home Health Company of Lebanon, Virginia; Dr. Allison Whitman and Pat Dillon of Abingdon Primary Care; Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Virginia and the many caregivers that provided exceptional care for him during his illness.
