Joe Darrell Phipps

Joe Darrell Phipps, 74, of Newark, DE went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 19, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Piney Creek, NC on September, 15, 1935, Mr. Phipps was the son of the late Garnet and Carrie Phipps of Sparta, NC. Mr. Phipps was a Korean War veteran stationed in California, Japan and Hawaii. He was employed by the Pennsylvannia Railroad and then by M&G Convoy where he was a car carrier for many years before retirement. He enjoyed traveling across the United States in his motor home with his wife, and was the #1 fan of Nascar racing. Mr. Phipps had a very accomplished racing career, from drag racing to dirt track racing to Winston-Cup racing (now Nascar) which he thoroughly enjoyed and was his passion. He is survived by his loving wife and angel from above, Wilma Jean (Williams) Phipps of Newark, DE; daughters, Cathy Lynn Novak and husband, Lenny of Newark, DE and Teresa Ann Lane of Pittsburgh, PA; son, Darrell Wayne Phipps and wife, Nikki of Gillsville, GA; brother, Ronald Gayle Phipps of Newark, DE and 5 grandchildren, Cody Novak, William Tharp III, Sarah Lane, Starr and Stone Phipps; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roscoe Bayron Phipps of Baltimore, MD; sister, Patsy Jean Waggoner of Florence, SC and mother-in-law, Maggie Williams of Sparta, NC. The family would like to thank close friends for over 50 years, Tom Carr and Marty Cockerham for their friendship and frequent visits, his friends at the 896 Diner where Mr. Phipps had breakfast almost every morning, and the staff at Christiana Care for their compassion and care during this time. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 26th at Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
