Grace Gentry Woodruff, age ninety seven and a resident of Brookridge Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, North Carolina passed away April 26 at the Palliative Care Unit at Wake Forest Baptist Health, Winston-Salem, NC. Born September 13, 1914 to the late Charles and Delia Gentry, Grace lived most of her life in Glade Valley, a part of Alleghany County, North Carolina. Grace was one of 13 children and growing up was a very strong student and athlete particularly in basketball at Glade Valley School. On October 12, 1935 she married Paul Woodruff who preceded her in death on August 4, 2001. In 1939 she professed her hope in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Grace spent her life as an incredible homemaker and gardener, active member in her church and community, and was known for her professional housekeeping services. She was an avid reader; her talents also included quilting, crocheting, and fishing. Grace’s favorite memories were in the mountains spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed gathering at church and the Cherry Lane Community building for potluck dinners or on the porch of her home for a glass of lemonade. What great stories she would share on a Sunday drive of family and friends growing up together in Glade Valley. She was one of the most competitive card players when friends got together to play a game of Rook. Grace’s other favorite memories were traveling to the beach in the fall with Paul and other relatives. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. Carol Woodruff, a daughter-in-law, also preceded her in death. Grace is survived by five children and their spouses: Ruby and Adron Woodruff of Lewisville, NC; Frank Woodruff of Myrtle Beach, SC; Clara and Ken Pruitt of Winston-Salem, NC; Norma and Clayton Brooks of Clemmons, NC; and Pauline and Bruce Shepherd of Lewisville, NC. Grandchildren and great grandchildren were the apples of Grace’s eye. She looked forward to their visits, and she shared her talents and competitive spirit with them that will live on in generations to come. The following grandchildren and their spouses survive: Dan and Cecilia Woodruff of Aventura, FL; Catherine and Dale Stancil of Winston-Salem, NC; Matt and Jennifer Hagen of Morehead City, NC; Steve and Elizabeth Brooks of Sparta, NC; Janet and James Carnell of London, England; Jon and Karyn Shepherd of Pittsburgh, PA; and Megan and Bob Berlinger of Winston-Salem, NC. Seven great grandchildren and one due in June also survive. Louise Friddle of Greensboro, NC and Joann Pendry of Lakeland, FL are surviving sisters. Opal Gentry of Plant City, FL; Laura Gentry of Arden, NC: Jean Gentry of North Wilkesboro, NC; and Lois Gentry of Glade Valley, NC are surviving sister-in-laws. Many nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends in Sparta, NC Saturday, April 28 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Grandview Funeral Home in Sparta, NC. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 pm. The body will be placed in the chapel thirty minutes prior to the service to lie in state. Burial will follow in Woodruff Cemetery at Glade Valley, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the donor’s choice. Grace Woodruff will be remembered for her hard working, resourceful, full of life spirit that made the most of life while caring for those around her. She loved the Lord and her family. Her laughter will be heard long after she has left this earth.
