Gervis “Dood” Johnson, 82, passed away peacefully at Bristol Regional Medical Center Monday, January 26, 2009. He was born on Monday, April 19, 1926 in Bristol, Tennessee. He was in the trucking business, leased to Carolyn Manufacturing until his retirement. He also owned and operated Penny Crystal Service Station on Virginia Avenue for many years and was in the moving business. So many people knew Dood. When you mentioned his name, everyone could remember something kind that he had done for them.
He is survived by Ruth Lunsford Johnson, his wife of 62 years. He was a devoted husband who cared for her faithfully in her struggle with illness. He continued caring for her until his death. He is also survived by his daughter, Penny Johnson; nephew, Fred Sproles, who is really like a son and Sandy Gullion, a friend who loved him like a father; niece, Tammy Carrier who was also like a daughter; and special friend, Judy Sproles, who loved and cared for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, T.S. and Hassie Miller Johnson; brothers, Orb, Harry, Tom and Hurst; sisters, Sylvia and Getus; and his mean little dog, Baby, who spent every minute on his lap. It gives his family and friends comfort in believing Baby and Doodle are sitting together now.
He requested no funeral services or flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Paw Prints Charity Fund at Ferguson Animal Hospital, 636 Anderson Street, Bristol, Tennessee 37620, (423) 764-8335.
