Robert J. “Bob” Shankel, 83, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Friday, December 4, 2009, in the Wellmont Hospice House. He was a son of the late Joe Bob and Hassie Osborne Shankel and was a life long resident of Bristol. He was an employee of the former H.P. King Company and was the owner and operator of the Robert Shankel Moving Company. He was a member of the King Masonic Lodge # 461 and was an active member of Fellowship Chapel for 40 years. Bob was a kind and gentle man.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia King Shankel; sisters, Lorene Byington and her husband Frank, Nancy Mitchell and Joyce Nixon and her husband Bob; brother-in-law Darius King; sister-in-law Roberta Shankel; special niece, Terry Williams; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fredrick Shankel and Joe “Junior” Shankel.
The family expresses their appreciation to Dr. John Green and his associates for the excellent care they provided.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o’clock Sunday at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Scott Price and honorary pastor Lester MacKinnon officiating. Masonic Rites will be presented by the King Lodge #461. Entombment will follow. Honorary pallbearers will be the Berean Class at Fellowship Chapel, Coolidge Goodman, and Bob’s many friends and neighbors.
