Paul Kerwin Nelson, 82, of Bluff City, Tennessee, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born November 13, 1929, a son of the late Jim and Rose Nelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Connie Nelson and twin sons; six sisters, Lucy Overholtzer, Effie Mae Grubbs, Mary Moore, Carolyn O'Neal, Patty Simerly, and Myrtle Nelson; and five brothers, Sanford, Ottis, Ed, John T, and Kenneth Nelson.
Paul was Superintendent of the Sullivan County School System, Principal, Teacher, Coach and Bus Driver. He retired from the Bristol TN School System. He was a Veteran having served in the US Army in the 361st Engineer Battalion. He was a member of Hickory Tree Church where he served the Lord as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. He helped originate the Hickory Tree Fire Dept., where he also served as a member.
Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Hayes Nelson; two sons, Kerwin Nelson, and Michael Nelson and wife Kim; his daughter Sandy Watkins and husband Ray who is like a son; Paul Daddy’s special grandchildren Brandon Renfro and wife Erin, Chase Watkins and Keileigh, Trey Nelson, Kaila Nelson, Collin Watkins and Jakob Michael Nelson; great grandchildren, Luke Renfro and Nelson Brantley Watkins; a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Larry Gouge.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Oakley-Cook Funeral. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Wall, Larry Gouge and Wade Lockner officiating. The committal service will follow in the Heritage Chapel of Memories in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Lockner, Sam Witcher, Randy Lockner, Roy Moore, Mark Stipes (like a son) and grandsons, Brandon Renfro, Chase Watkins and Trey Nelson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ronnie Grubbs, Jack Lockner, Earl Tolliver, A.W. Cawood, Farris Nelson, Bill Morrell, The Hickory Tree Church Family, Wayne Rogers and a very special family friend, Bonnie Witcher.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Collin Watkins Fund at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church, 1041 Elizabeth Chapel Rd., Bluff City, TN 37618.
