James "Jim" Vance, age 88, of Crossnore passed away on Sunday October 9, 2011 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
A native of Avery County, he was born April 6, 1923 a son of the late Elmore and Stella Aldridge Vance.
He was a member of Crossnore First Baptist Church.
Jim served his country in both the United States Army and the United States Navy receiving two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, 3 honorary Medals and 6 ribbons for major battles. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed hunting and music.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, Todd Vance; brothers, Bucky, Jack, Ben, Buster, Richard Vance and Dolphus Parker; sisters, Snow Vance, Ethel Porter, Leo Shomaker, Hazel Aldridge, Cloe Vance.
A very sweet, compassionate man and loving father, who showed his kids the world, and opened his home to anyone, Jim has left to cherish his memory: his wife, Jennie Clark Vance of the home; children, Dianne Vance and Bucky Vance both of Crossnore; sisters, Polly Daniels and husband Buster of Newland, Bonnie Turbyfill and husband Rhonda of Newland, JoAnn Douglas of Alma, GA., Linnie Clark of Morganton; his grandchildren who were his life, Nichole Hively and husband, Scott of Stephenville, TX, Stella Vance of Crossnore, Courtney Vance of Crossnore, Mercedez Vance Rose of North Cove and Dakota Vance of Crossnore; great grandchildren, Trevor Vance, Sophie and Lillie Hively, Cooper Rose.
Funeral services for James "Jim" Vance will be conducted on, Wednesday, October 12th at 8:00 p.m. at the Crossnore First Baptist Church with Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be Thursday, October 13th 2:00 p.m. in the White Pine Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church at 1:15 to go in procession to the cemetery.
