Arnel Winston Townsend, age 79, of Banner Elk went home to be with the Lord on Monday October 31, 2011.
He was born December 25, 1931 to the late Gurney Patterson and Allie Fair Arnette Townsend.
Along with his parents, he is proceeded in death by: his sister, Margaret Townsend; niece, Karen Townsend; nephew, Clayton Arnett.
Arnel served in the Army in the Korean War and received a Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He was a truck driver for C.L. Loven Lumber Co. and retired after 21 years.
He enjoyed watching car racing and listening to blue grass gospel.
Arnel has left to cherish his memory: his wife, Ruth M. Townsend of 54 years; sons, Bruce Townsend and wife Elana of Matney, Tony Townsend and wife Darlene of Pineola and Tim Townsend and wife Janet of Newland; sisters, Ruby Townsend of Roan Mtn., TN and Edna Calloway of Montezuma; one grandson, Alan Townsend; five granddaughters, Crystal Townsend, Tonya Townsend, Carrie Townsend, Amber Townsend and Tasha Townsend; 15 great grandchildren, Destiny, Charity "Brownie", Emma, Hailey, Kailey, Isiah, Kiana, Landon, Deegan, Jonah, Mariah, Harley, Anna, Hope and Zoe; nieces, Linda, Theresa, Lisa, Faye, Betty and Sandra; nephews, J.D. Gordan and Dewayne.
Funeral services for Arnel Winston Townsend will be conducted on Wednesday, November 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Charles Hindman, Rev. Jim Shoupe, Jr. and Rev. Ken Staton officiating. Interment will follow in the Townsend Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 1st from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VFW Honor Guard of the Lung Association.
