Donald Baker Barrier, age 94, of Newland, the Jonas Ridge Community, passed away on Friday February 17, 2012 at his residence.
A native of Burke County, he was born September 20, 1917 a son of the late James Hampton Barrier and Martha Ried Barrier.
He was a member of the Jonas Ridge United Methodist Church, where he served as Adult Sunday School Teacher for 25 years and church treasurer for 25 years. He was a Charter Member of the Jonas Ridge Ruritan Club for 42 years. He worked at Henredon Furniture, Drexel Furniture and E.J. Victor for 35 years.
Mr. Barrier served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey (BB62) from 1943 - 1945 in the South Pacific.
Along with his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his: son, Larry Joe Barrier; four brothers; and three sisters.
Donald has left to cherish his memory his: wife of 54 years, Lucille Fox Barrier of the home; son, James Barrier, and his wife Nona, of Shelby, NC; daugther, Beverly Buchanan, and her husband, Randy, of Jonas Ridge, NC; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Donald Barrier will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Jonas Ridge United Methodist Church with Revs. Keith Nichols and Keith Tutterow officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:00 noon on Monday.
Interment will follow the funeral in the George Barrier Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.
