George G. Dean, age 94, of Newland passed away on Wednesday February 22, 2012 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, TN.
A native of Oyster Bay, NY., he was born January 13, 1918 a son of the late William and Georgiana Goodrich Dean.
He served in the US Army Air Corp. during WWII from 1942 - 1945 where he flew 173 combat missions and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Soldiers Medal along with numerous other decorations.
George attended Mountainside Lutheran Church and enjoyed playing golf, violin and the harmonica.
He was member of the VFW Pat Ray post #4286, the Lions Club at Oyster Bay, Mt. Glen Golf Club, since 1983, Officer of LIA in Long Island, NY., Better Business Bureau and ABA.
Along with his parents, George was preceded in death by his: brother, W. Miles Dean; niece, Christine Dean; grandson, John Brady.
George has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Jean Dean of the home daughters, Deborah Dean of Greer, SC., Victoria Brady of Conway, SC., Sandra Harris and husband Richard of Simpsonville, SC.; step-sons, William Strauss and wife Gretchen of Waterford, ME., Robert Strauss and wife Jeanne of Castro Valley, CA.; sister, Dorothy Dean of MA.; former wife and mother of his children, Leonora Dean of Greer, SC.; grandchildren, Kathleen McDonough, Kenneth Brady, Jr., Christopher Brady, Jr., Sarah Brady, Matthew Brady, Alexander Harris, Scott Harris, Angela Strauss, Erica Strauss, Julie Hellstrom, Melissa Strauss; 3 great grandchildren; nephews, William Dean, III, Arthur Silver, Robert Silver; special friend, Brent Taylor of Conway, SC.
Services for Mr. Dean will be Saturday, March 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville, NC. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
