Florence Greene

Mrs. Florence Street Greene, 87, Johnson City, died on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Bakersville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Ed & Nellie Gouge Street.

Mrs. Greene’s life was shaped by her experience as a child and a young woman. Because of this, she was a very proud and independent lady. During World War II, Mrs. Greene was employed by Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company, Baltimore, in 1942. In 1950, she and her husband, Frank B. Greene, moved to Johnson City.

Mrs. Greene was a dietary worker for the VA Medical Center, retiring in 1990. An active member of First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Susannah Wesley Class and UMW. She enjoyed the fellowship of their get-togethers with her Sunday school class and with her pastor, Rev. Garland Thayer.

She is remembered by her family for always being totally honest. Mrs. Greene enjoyed having family over to her house, going out to eat with her husband on Friday’s, and traveling. She was formerly an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by two sons & daughters-in-law, Shelby B. & Judi Greene, Gray, and Eddie Roger & Bonnie Greene, Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Mary Greene, Gray; 7 grandchildren, Todd Greene, Georgetown, SC, Lorrie Greene, Okinawa, Japan, Jason Greene, Johnson City, Josh Greene, Elizabethton, Scott Greene, Bluff City, Angie Buckingham, Florida, and Susie Ketron, Kingsport; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Frank B. Greene in 1998; a son, Dallas Ray Greene; 5 sisters, Mae Garland, Elva Greene, Norma Ledford, Frances Ray, & Mary Nell Graybeal; and 2 brothers, Jesse & Woodrow Street.

A Celebration of Life service for Florence S. Greene will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, with Rev. Garland Thayer and Rev. Scott Greene officiating. Her family will receive friends from Noon until the service hour. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. A Committal service will follow in Roselawn Memory Gardens.
