Mr. Harley L. Ferrell, 71, Johnson City, devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 22, 2010 at the Johnson City Medical Center following nearly a ten-year battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was surrounded by his family, whose love for him is beyond words. Throughout his life and especially during his illness, he was a witness for Christ and an inspiration to many, handling his illness with grace, optimism and unwavering faith, never missing an opportunity to express his trust in God. He was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church. He devoted his time and his many skills to help keep the church building in repair, as long as his health would allow. Working at the church helped to sustain him throughout much of his illness giving him much joy and purpose. He loved working hard and was truly fulfilled when doing so.
He was a 1957 graduate of Happy Valley High School. His nearly fifty one year marriage to his high school sweetheart Nancy, was the cornerstone of his life. His devotion to her was always evident. Together they raised two daughters and were later blessed with three grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed sports of all kinds, but particularly loved watching the Lady Vols play basketball, making frequent trips to Knoxville to watch them play.
At the time of his diagnosis, he was a machinist and mechanic for Kingsport Press -Quebecor Printing in Kingsport, where he had been employed for thirty eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Franklin and Helen Blevins Ferrell; brothers, Oscar Ferrell and John Ferrell; and sister, Francis Campbell.
Mr. Ferrell is survived by his wife, Nancy Chesser Ferrell; two daughters, Mikki Ferrell Wright and her husband Steve, Johnson City, and Kelly Ferrell Price and husband DeWayne, Gray; three grandchildren, Logan Wright, Meredith Wright and Madison Smith; two brothers, Edward Ferrell, Johnson City, and Steve Ferrell, Lake Orion, MI; two sisters, Mary Bowman, Butler, TN, and Peggy Harrah, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service for Mr. Harley L. Ferrell will be conducted on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 7:00 PM at Boones Creek Christian Church with David Clark, Minister and Dick Morris, Assistant Minister officiating. The family will welcome friends from 4:00 PM -7:00PM prior to the service at the church. Interment and graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Services at 2:15 PM to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Steve Wright, DeWayne Price, Logan Wright, Jack Greene, Eddie McCreadie, John Jennings, Robert Mitchell, and Don Curd. Honorary Pallbearers are, the late Joe Slonaker, Charles “Boge” Dyer, David Saylor, Billy Jo Keefauver, Don Leonard, Jack Blevins, Carl Kincheloe, Darryle Milhorn, Dave Sauer, Greg Livingston, Bill Utsman, Johnny Utsman, Bob Hall, Howard Potter, Allen Silver, Tom Riddle, Dr. Ray Lamb, and the Joy Class at Boones Creek Christian Church.
The family would like to send special thanks to the nurses and staff at McLEOD Cancer and Blood Center, Judy Maynard and the Chemotherapy nurses at Regional Cancer Center, and the nurses and staff at Johnson City Medical Center 2700 ICU for the care and concern shown to Mr. Ferrell and the family.
