David William Leighton, 63, of Kingsport, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A native of Lowell, MA he was the son of the late William and Roberta Stavley Leighton. Mr. Leighton was a member at Calvary Baptist Church in Lowell, MA. David proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Gallantry Cross with Palm and a Rifle Marksman Badge. He was an avid outdoorsman always seeking pleasure in hiking and yard work. David was a caring, passionate man that had a zeal for life. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a special brother-in-law, Kenny Greathead.
David leaves behind his best friend and wife, Sandra Tomlinson Leighton, Kingsport; children, William “Richie” Leighton and wife Amy, Kingsport, Christopher Leighton and wife Angela, Duffield, VA, Jennifer Belanger and husband AJ, Greeneville, and Joshua Leighton, Kingsport; grandchildren, Jacob, Parker, Finn and one granddaughter-to-be; two very special step grandchildren, Dawn and Jayden; sisters and a brother-in-law, Sandra Greathead, and Mercedes and Barry Clegg, all of Lowell, MA, and Louise Legrand, Port Charles, FL. Several special nieces and nephews also survive.
A Service of Remembrance and Celebration for Mr. David William Leighton will be conducted at 8:00 PM, Monday, April 16, 2012 in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Reverend John Carney officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 PM till the service hour. A Military Committal service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Everyone is asked to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers are Billy Greathead, Fred Greathead, Christopher Greathead, Brian Greathead, Scott Clegg and Sandy McFarlan. Honorary pallbearers are Ed Lyons, Art Belanger and Rick Gallo.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff on the Charlie Ward floor at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and to the nurses and staff with Amedysis Hospice for the care and support shown to Mr. Leighton and his family during their time of need.
