Versie Benfield Pendley, age 95, of Pendley Road in Spruce Pine died Friday, April 24, 2009 at her home.
A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of the Oliver and Naomi Calloway Benfield. She was the wife of the late Fred Pendley who passed away in 1995. Mrs. Pendley was preceded in death by two sisters; Bertie Carpenter and Trula Dennie; five brothers; Herman, Hoke, Hale, Harry, and Henry Benfield; and three sons-in-law; Benny Hollifield, Ralph Stamey, and Perry Honeycutt. She was the oldest member of the Beaver Creek Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, was past President of the W.M.U., and was a choir member for many years. She was known as “Mother” to all of her extended family.
The funeral service for Mrs. Versie Pendley will be conducted on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Beaver Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Terrill Greene will officiate the service. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Pendley Cemetery.
Mrs. Pendley is survived by a son; Bobby Pendley and wife, Betty of Spruce Pine; six daughters; Betty Stamey of Spruce Pine, Jo Lominac and husband, Bob of Spruce Pine; Shirley Hollifield of Spruce Pine; Judy Honeycutt of Spruce Pine; Carolyn Renfro and husband, Wade of Spruce Pine; and Patsy Chambers and husband, Jim of Hopkinsville, KY; fifteen grandchildren; Janie Greene, Jennifer Jones, Darrell Renfro, Donna Renfro, Mark Hollifield, Charles Pendley, Crystal Howell, Carrie Duncan, Buzz Chambers, Travis Chambers, Melanie Fields, David Honeycutt, Richard Honeycutt, Kathy New, and Jonathan Renfro, and sixteen great grandchildren.
