Sam Watson, Jr. 84, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at the VA Community Living Center in Asheville. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Sam, Sr. and Maude Snyder Watson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step mother, Ruth Aldridge Watson, two brothers; Carroll and Thomas J. Watson and three sisters; Bernice Vance, Clariece Wiseman and Betty Hise. Mr. Watson was a member of Pine Branch Baptist Church and a retired machinist. Mr. Watson was a U.S. Army veteran and a P.O.W. of World War II. He served in the European Theater in France and in Belgium and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, P.O.W. Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Medal, and two Bronze Campaign Stars.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-five years; Rachel Pitman Watson of the home, and a daughter; Kathy Hendren and husband, Adrian of Morganton. He is also survived by four sisters; Beulah Young of Minneapolis; Faye Hughes of Linville; Ruby Vaughn of Pineola and Linda McClellan of Spruce Pine and a brother; Ralph Watson of Roan Mountain, TN.
Funeral services for Mr. Watson will be conducted at 3:00 pm Thursday, April 1, 2010 in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Yellow Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, PO Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777 or charity of choice.
