Warren Dale Braaten was born on June 4, 1935 to Gilman and Selma (Flodin) Braaten of rural Glenwood, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at the Chippewa Falls Lutheran church in Terrace, MN. He passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.
Warren (Buddy) attended rural elementary school and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1953. He started his beekeeping business upon graduation and continued in that business until his health forced an early retirement in 1992. He was a member of the National Guard for eight years and was also a youth firearms safety instructor for many years. Buddy was active in the Chippewa Falls church and served on the council in several capacities. In 1961 he was named Pope County Farmer of the year. He was active in the Lake Region Beekeeping organization as well as the Minnesota State Beekeeping Federation where he served as an officer. He also was a member of the Glenwood School Board in the mid 1970's.
Warren married Janet Pletschett of Brooten in 1959 and to them three sons were born; Alan, Lee and Owen. They made their home in rural Glenwood, lived at Lake Linka for eight years and retired to Glenwood in 1997. Buddy had many hobbies; enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening and especially tending his beautiful flower gardens the last ten years. He enjoyed woodworking and made many keepsake items for his family using wood raised on his own farm. Yearly family camping trips were a must as were hunting and fishing trips to the Boundary Waters, Lake Superior, Alaska, Wyoming and other various places with friends. His love for the water was great and especially the many hours spent on his beloved Lake Superior. The past ten winters were spent in Lake Havasu, Arizona, where he loved to fish the Colorado River and made many new good friends.
Buddy loved his family and grandchildren deeply. He enjoyed sitting around a campfire sharing tales of his heritage with the young children and enjoyed attending the athletic events of his grandchildren which he was able to do right up until a couple weeks before his death.
Warren is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet, of Glenwood, MN; sons, Al (Shari) and Lee (Donna), all of Glenwood, MN, and Owen (Debra) of Minneapolis, MN; 7 grandchildren, Tanna, Danny, Taylor, Traci, Jacob, Lindsay and Samuel; a number of cousins and countless friends. His friends were many and each one was special and like family to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Stanley.
God Bless his memory!
