Darrel Merlin Henke, son of William and Esther (Scherer) Henke, was born on March 25, 1937 in Youngtown, ND. He grew up on a farm near Youngtown and attended county school. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Hanover, ND. In 1954 he entered the U.S. Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1956. Upon returning home to the family farm in Youngtown, ND, he worked on the farm and did road construction on I-94. On June 4, 1959, Darrel was united in marriage to Jeanette Kuhn at St. Peters Church in Hanover, ND. The very next day the couple moved to a farm they purchased near Sedan, MN, where they have since made their home. In addition to farming, Darrel hauled milk and drove school bus. He and Jeanette are members of Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church near Terrace, MN.
Darrel enjoyed his 2 cylinder John Deere tractor, milking his Jersey cows for 43 years and caring for his horses. He also enjoyed playing cards, Yahtzee, watching westerns on television, telling stories and having coffee with relatives and friends.
Darrel was a member of the township board, the Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church Council and Cemetery board. He was also a member of the Glenwood American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanette; his sons, Bill Henke and David (Angie) Henke, of Glenwood, MN; four grandchildren, Ben, Caitlin, Kathryn and Julia Henke; a brother, Aldean Henke of Glenwood, MN; and a sister, Margie Kjeldahl of Glenwood, MN.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther Henke.
