Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Remmy, daughter of Fredrick C. and Felicia M. (Spangler) Remmy, was born on April 17, 1922, in Saxonburg, PA. Her family later moved to Verona, a suburb of Pittsburg, PA. As a young lady she attended the local Methodist church and graduated from the Verona, PA, high school. During World War II, she worked as a supervisor of a welding crew in the shipyards before moving to California to join her brother who was working in the kitchen of the officer's club at Camp Pendleton. At one of the club's parties, a young Navy sailor named Ken McEwen asked Betty to dance and the two soon began dating. The couple married on February 24, 1948, in Oceanside, CA at a Methodist Church parsonage. They honeymooned in Mexico before moving to a farm near Clinton in Big Stone County, Minnesota, where Ken began his farming career. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Kenneth, Jr. and Felicia.
Ken and Betty retired from farming in 1967 and moved to the Twin Cities, where they managed and maintained apartment complexes for the next 20 years. In 1998, Ken and Betty moved to a senior apartment complex where they were liaisons between residents and the management. In 2000, they moved to The Gables, a senior housing complex in Glenwood, MN. Betty entered Lakeview Good Samaritan Center in 2008 due to failing health. Ken visited Betty every day at the Good Samaritan and became an active volunteer there.
Over the years, Betty was active in church activities at the various congregations where she was a member. She loved watching football, gardening, crafts and dancing with Ken. She was an avid traveler, having traveled from coast to coast. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her wonderful personality and her strong work ethic. The youngest members of her family will miss sitting on grandma's lap and her entire family will miss the love she so generously gave to each of them.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ken, of Glenwood, MN; their son, Kenneth McEwen, Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Rochester, MN; and their daughter, Felicia Knudson and her husband, Bill, of Glenwood, MN; 6 grandsons, Frank, Bob and Casey Coolbroth, Curtis and Eric McEwen and Jim Knudson; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Fredrick and Richard Remmy.
