Lawrence "Junior" Walker, age 80, of Villard, died on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Knute Nelson nursing home in Alexandria, MN, surrounded by his family, following a long battle with cancer. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 4th at Villard United Methodist Church, with Rev. Alan Bolte officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Friday AT THE CHURCH and resume on Saturday morning, one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Lake Leven Cemetery, Villard. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Lawrence Samuel Walker, the son of Lawrence L. and Mabel (McQueen) Walker was born December 17, 1929 on the family farm north of Villard. He graduated from Villard High School in 1947. In 1948, he and his brother Leonard went to Alaska (Livengood) to work in the gold mines.
Lawrence joined the U.S. Navy in March 1951. He served on the USS Tarawa, which took him to France, Italy, Japan, Australia and other points around the world. On July 25, 1953, Lawrence was united in marriage to Marilyn Polzine at Villard Methodist Church. They spent the next two years moving to Rhode Island, back to Minnesota, out to Rhode Island and finally to Boston. Lawrence was discharged on March 13, 1955. They then moved to a farm north of Villard where he farmed, raising sheep and dairy cattle. Lawrence and Marilyn shared 53 years of marriage before her death in 2007.
Lawrence was baptized, confirmed and a life-long member of the Villard United Methodist Church. He belonged to the Robert E. Lee Post of the American Legion in Villard. He especially loved hunting and fishing. He shot 11 elk, 64 whitetail deer, 1 bear and shot a moose with his brother Tom. He loved spending time with his family and friends in the outdoors. In his younger years he was active in sports and he played baseball for the Villard town team. Junior also loved watching the Twins, Vikings and Gophers.
He is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey (Cynthia) of Villard, and John (Ann) of Basalt, CO; three daughters, Linda (Tom) DeWitt of Carlos, Kathy (Bob) Jacobs of Villard, Cindy (Jerry) Welinski of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Jodi, Tara and Travis DeWitt, Cory (Marybeth) and Jeremy Walker, Benjamin, Hannah, Nicholas and Grace Welinski, Kaylee and Bradley Jacobs, and Manning and Ruby Walker; a brother, Charles (Marion) Walker; 2 sisters-in-law, Bea Walker and Sue Walker; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn, an infant daughter, and his two brothers, Leonard "Buster" Walker and Thomas Walker.
