GLENWOOD - Mathilda "Tillie" Swanson, age 88, of Glenwood died Friday April 7, 2006 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, Minnesota.
Memorial service will be 2 P.M. Monday April 10, 2006 at the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood, Minnesota with Rev. Greg Kapphahn officiating. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service at Hoplin Funeral Home.
Mathilda "Tillie" Swanson, the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Jacober) Jundt, was born November 23, 1917 on their family farm near Eureka, South Dakota. They moved to McLaughlin in her childhood years. She was a graduate of McLaughlin High School then worked in Selby, South Dakota as a waitress and a payroll secretary for a road construction company in New England, North Dakota. Later she moved to Bismark, North Dakota attending and graduating from Cristy Beauty School. She started her own beauty shop in Bismark. After selling her salon she moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked at the Omaha Motel and Resturant where she met Earl Swanson. They were united in marriage on January 2, 1943 and then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. Shortly after Earl joined the U.S. Navy and they lived in San Diego and San Francisco, California. After the service they moved back to Glenwood and purchased the Inlet Resort on Lake Minnewaska. After Earl's death in 1978 the resort was sold. Tillie moved to Pelican Lake Estates enjoying retirement there. She was an active member of the Pelican Lake Sportsman's Club, an elected official for the city of Long Beach, Officer of the Degree of Honor Insurance Company and a member of the Glenwood United Parish. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, knitting, gardening, visiting with neighbors and friends, tending to her loyal cats and dogs over the years, especially "Puppi". She especially enjoyed following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports and school events. Tillie always looked forward to her yearly "jaunt" to McLaughlin to attend her Jundt family reunion. Even though she was hospitalized the last three weeks of her life, she enjoyed sharing life's memories with her family and joking and teasing with her children.
Mathilda is survived by children, Barbara Kay and her husband Gary Holmgren of Beaverton, Oregon, Craig E. Swanson of Glenwood, Gary and wife Lois Swanson of Glenwood; grandchildren, Kim (Tait) Blair, Jeramie (Kristin) Swanson, Michael P.E. Swanson, Jared (Katie) Swanson, Rachelle (Matt) Walker, Melissa (Bennett) Powell, Benjamin Hollmgren and Kala Pederson; three great-grandchildren, Allison, Hayley, Alan; brother, Emil and wife Irene Jundt of Black Hawk, South Dakota; sister, Anne Merkel of McLaughlin, South Dakota and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; four brothers, Fred Jr., Julius, and two infant brothers, Edward and Julus; three sisters, Maggie Borah, Lydia Moser, and Hilda Utecht Johnson.
