Hazel Amanda Flom was born to Sam O. and Louisa (Thompson) Flom on October 13, 1911 in Lowry, MN. At the age of 5 her family moved to Glenwood, where she's resided ever since. During her school years Hazel participated in many activities and was elected class president in her senior year. Following graduation, she attended St. Cloud State University for three years. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Arnie Hedine. The two were united in marriage on September 6, 1937 at Glenwood Lutheran Church and were blessed to be able to celebrate 67 years of marriage before Arnie's death in 2005.
Hazel enjoyed many creative hobbies. She was a talented seamstress and knitter, donating many handmade items to others. She was a great cook, baker and hostess and often the center of family functions. She gardened, golfed and was an excellent bridge player (she loved winning those quarters!). As a couple, Arnie and Hazel enjoyed dancing, traveling and wintering in Arizona. Hazel's heart was in giving. She dedicated twenty years volunteering for the Courage Center, a cause she truly believed in. Hazel was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church for 89 years, where she was active in circle, ladies aid, annual church events and taught Sunday School. She also spent many years as an active participant in the Pope County Fair, winning many blue ribbons for her garden entries. Hazel was a blessing to her family, friends and all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Claire (Tom) Rykken of White Bear Lake, MN, A. David (Jeanne) of Cheyenne WY, Carole (Roger) Nelson of Forest Lake, MN; five grandchildren, Elyn and David Rykken, Mark and Lisa Cameron, Jeffrey Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Crissey and Scott Cameron; three sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
