Warren O. Hartman was born to Warren and Adeline (Hanson) Hartman on February 25, 1931, in Brainerd, MN. He grew up in Wadena, graduating from Wadena High School, and enjoyed spending summers in Aitkin living at his parent’s lake home with his cousin, Clint.
Warren continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953 and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1955. He also attended McPhail School of Music, and was a post-graduate in veterinary studies.
Dr. Hartman practiced in Medford, WI, and attended the Meat & Dairy Hygiene School in Chicago, IL, while becoming a member of the United States Army Veterinary Corps from 1956 to 1958 serving at Ft. Meyer, VA, and Ft. Slocum, NY. After leaving the Army, he practiced in Barrington, Il, before settling in Wadena, MN, where he helped his father with his harness horses.
Warren Hartman and Carolyn Darroch were united in marriage on December 27, 1957 at the Naval Chapel in Washington, DC.
Dr. Hartman was an active community member serving as Past President and member of the Wadena Chamber of Commerce, Past President and member of the Wadena Area Concert Association, President of the Wadena Area United Way, Past President and member of Minnesota Harness Racing, Inc., life member of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, Wadena Area Community Band and First Liners New Orleans Jazz Band, Wadena Lions Club, Past President and board member of Central Minnesota Boy Scout Council, Chairman of the District Boy Scout Eagle Board of Review, and was a dedicated member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wadena.
Dr Hartman served as Chairman of the Wadena School Board for several years after serving as Chairman on the Citizen’s Educational Advisory Committee for District 819. He was a member of the Animal Health Technology Advisory Committee at the University of Minnesota Technical College in Waseca, along with serving on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Hartman was awarded the Boy Scout District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver from the Central Minnesota Boy Scout Council, the Wadena community Service Award from the Wadena Chamber of Commerce in 1982, Friend of Wadena County Fair Association in 2007 for over 40 years of volunteer veterinary services to the Wadena County Fair, the Wadena AVTI award and State Education Award MAVTISSA in 1981-1982, a MHRI plaque in 1989 for dedication and efforts to promote Harness Racing in the state of Minnesota, Horse of the Year in 1979 and 1980 for Abbe Luck by the MHRI, and was inducted into the MN Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2008, he was nominated for the Experience Works Prime Time Awards Program.
After a short illness, Dr. Hartman passed away on February 9, 2011 at the age of 79, at the University of Minnesota Hospital Medical Center, Fairview in Minneapolis.
Dr. Hartman was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Adeline. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Wadena; children Karl (Vivian) of Red Wing, Laurie (John) Costello of Painted Post, NY, and Jim of Wadena; grandchildren Kelly Costello, Holly Hartman, Neal Hartman, and Jake Costello; great-grandchild Gavin Costello; brother-in-law & sister-in-law Gerald and Patricia Schachner; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. on February 26, 2011 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wadena, with Pastor Marli Danielson officiating.
Memorials are preferred to the Wadena County Humane Society, Central MN Boy Scout Council, or the Wadena Area Community Band.
