Irene Elaine Macho was born February 22, 1922 to Gustaf Leander and Agusta (Swanson) Wistedt in Lake Marshall Township, Lyons County, MN.
Irene graduated with the Class of 1940 in Mound, and continued her education attaining a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in 1955. She served as a surgical tech and occupational therapist in the United States Women’s Army Corps from November 1943 at Ft. Snelling, MN until her honorable discharge in June 1946 at Ft. Sheridan, Il.
Irene Wistedt and William Joseph Macho were united in marriage on June 17, 1960 at Highland Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. She continued as a physical therapist until her retirement in 1961. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Ladies Aid and the American Legion Post 171 of Wadena. Her hands were always busy with vegetable gardening, sewing, volunteer work and especially with crafts at Fair Oaks Lodge. As time allowed she enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and time spent with her extended step-family.
At the age of 90 years, Irene passed away on April 25, 2012 at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. She was preceded in death by her husband William; her parents Gustaf and Agusta; an infant son brothers Mervyn and Winston Wistedt; and sister Marie Jessen; brother-in-law Lloyd Jessen; sister-in-law Loretta Wistedt; and step-daughter Agnes Wilson.
Irene is survived by her step-son Isidore (Caroline) Macho of Wadena; step-daughters Willa Hoffman, of Wadena, Martha Wilkowski of Perham, Catherine Hertel of New York Mills, and Caroline Opatz of Rice; and 30 step-grandchildren & 61 step- great-grandchildren
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena with Father Donald Wagner as celebrant. Honorary pallbearers were Irene's step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena.
