Allen Richard Engebretson was born on June 3, 1931 to Axel and Myrtle (Nelson) Engebretson in Mentor, MN.
Allen served as a sergeant in the 5th Armored Division of the United States Army from July 1952 until his honorable discharge in July 1954, and received a United Nations Service medal, a Korean Service ribbon, a Bronze Service Star, and National Defense Service medal.
Allen and Juanita Bilderback were united in marriage on November 25, 1952. They resided in Little Canada until moving to Wadena in 1996. He worked as a bricklayer and was the proud father of six children. He was a member of the Bricklayers Local #1, and Rice Street Sportsman’s Club (49 Club). He filled his free time with fishing, cutting wood, vegetable gardening, snowmobiling, caring for his cats, going to garage sales, and fixing garage sale finds. He loved to visit with his family and friends.
Allen passed away at the age of 80 years on May 17, 2012 at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. He was preceded in death by his parents Axel and Myrtle; brothers Chester Kubic, Harvey Kubic, Vern Engebretson, and Burton Engebretson; sisters June Poirier, and Arlene Kubic-Nelson.
He is survived by his wife Juanita of Wadena, children Deborah Urbanski of Wadena, Paula (Dale) VanBlaricom of Oakdale, Melissa (Jeff) Olson of Two Harbors, Mark Engebretson of Bay Port, MN, Monica Engebretson (Sid) of North Branch, and Dean (Shawna) Engebretson of Maui, HI; six grandchildren & 1 great-grandchild; brother Everett Engebretson of St. Paul; and sister Sandra Schleh of Jacobson.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Wadena with Pastor Vaughn White presiding. Urnbearer was Steven Urbanski. Military honors were provided by the Elmer Goche Post 3922, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wadena, MN. Inurnment was in the Wadena Cemetery.
