Eugene "Bud" William Herding was born on June 6, 1933, in Rock Rapids, Iowa to the late William and Bena (Aeilts) Herding. He was baptized on August 8, 1933, at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth and was later confirmed on May 25, 1947, in the Hadley Lutheran Church in Hadley, Minnesota. Bud received his education in Hadley country school. He then helped with work around the family farm and worked at the creamery until enlisting in the United States Army on June 15, 1953. He received the National Defense Service Medal while in the military and completed his high school education. On May 5, 1955, Bud was honorably discharged and returned to Hadley, Minnesota where he continued to work in the creamery.
On August 16, 1956, Bud was united in marriage to Gladys Erickson at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden. After marriage, Bud and Gladys lived in Hadley for a year until moving to Storden where they began to farm. This marriage was blessed with eleven children. Bud had many wonderful years on the farm and retired in 2005. Since retiring, Bud and Gladys enjoyed winters in Arizona. This past weekend, Bud became suddenly ill and was taken to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, May 7th, 2008, with his family at his bedside. Through the years, Bud will be remembered for his enjoyment of farming, collecting and restoring John Deere Tractors, going to farm auctions, playing cards, and most of all, his love for his family, especially his grandchildren.
Bud was a longtime member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden where he was on the church council, a fifty year member and past commander of the Herbert-Reese American Legion Post #391 in Storden; a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5098 in Westbrook; and the Amo Township Board.
Bud's dedicated family who mourns his loss includes his wife of fifty-one years, Gladys Herding of Storden; eleven children, Gayle (Keith) Wolf of Jeffers; Debbra (Reid) Miller of Storden; Connie (David) Engen of Revere; Kelly (Steve) Lundgren of Lake Lillian; Pam (Steve Harris) Hanson of Willmar; Todd (Susan) Herding of Storden; Timm (Jenny) Herding of Westbrook; Lori (Corey) Bunting of Westbrook; Jean (Ralph) Price of Lamberton; Tory (Betsy) Herding of Windom; Travis (Laridee Dibble) Herding of Storden; 27 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother, Joyce (Richard) Johnson of Hadley; Marlys (Val) Hromatko of Worthington; Dale Herding of Westbrook; Joan (Phil) Peterson of Northfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Bud is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dennis and Curt Herding.
