ODOM, Mrs. Evelyn "Big Mama" - Age 97, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 11 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Vernon Chapel AME Church, 5802 Dupont St., with funeral service commencing at 12Noon. Interment Crestwood Memorial Cemetery, G-2020 E. Hill Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Odom will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Evelyn “Big Mama” Odom was born June 17, 1915 in Shelby County, Tennessee, the daughter of Jerden and Ellen Thomas. Evelyn worked for Chrysler Motor Company in Detroit, MI years ago, after which she was a homemaker. She also loved attending Worship Service, especially at Vernon Chapel AME Church and proclaiming the Gospel. Evelyn worked with numerous committees. Her personality was just as kind as her heart.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her only child, daughter, LaBertha White of Flint; grandchildren, Patricia (Stanley) Gill of Flint, Nola Walker of Flint, Gwendolyn (Rufus) Edwards of Flint Twp., Linda (Solomon) Outlaw of Flint Twp, Cassandra White of Flint, Sharon Lusane of Flint and LaVonda (Douglas) Wilkerson of Flushing, MI; 37 great grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Dorothy Sanders of Memphis and Earlene (Circo) Ray of Memphis; nephews, Adolph Bolton, Memphis, TN, Henry (Jacqueline) Thomas of Memphis, TN, Willie (Cherry) Piggee of Kansas, Vance (Ruth) Jones of Memphis, TN, Leon (Carolyn) Lee of Virginia, Richard Lee of Atlanta, Melvin (Sandra) Lee of Virginia, Charles (Betty) Shelton of Michigan, Elmo (Kay) White of Flint; a host of relatives and friends including special friends, Susie Brown, Ann Newman, and the Hopkins family.
Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Odom; parents, Jerden and Ellen Thomas; 9 brothers and sisters, Chady, Elnora , Emma, Gladys, Georgia, John, Watson, Odell and Robert, son-in-law, Charlie White, grandson-in-law, Willie Walker, niece, Maggie White.
