ATKINSON, Mr. Lawrence F. - Age 59, passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at his residence in Ypsilanti, MI. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at New Creation Church of God, 3472 Lennon Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Atkinson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd, and may be viewed from 12noon-8p.m. Friday.
Mr. Lawrence Frederick Atkinson was born in Flint, Michigan, February 16, 1953. He was the youngest of Mitchell Atkinson Sr. & Willie P.’s six children. Lawrence was baptized at the Nevada St. Church of Christ in Flint, MI. He attended Roosevelt Elementary, Dolan Middle, and Beecher High Schools in Flint and Mt. Morris, MI. Lawrence served in the Marines Corps where he earned his G.E.D. He continued his education, earning an Associate’s degree from Cleary University in Howell MI and at the time of his passing, was only a few credits from receiving his B.A. in Political Science from Eastern Michigan University in December of 2012. Lawrence worked briefly for GM Buick Motor Division in Flint and held various sales jobs over the years. As a Mortgage Broker, he put families into homes in Genesee County. Lawrence was called to the ministry and was a multi-denominational Evangelist and Pastor for a number of years throughout the City of Flint. He also worked in Michigan’s correctional system as a Licensed Prison Chaplin. His passion for ministering to people was evident in all his interactions. Lawrence had a gift and love for the Gospel and for music. He loved to sing and enjoyed playing the guitar.
He leaves to cherish his memory: father, Mitchell Atkinson Sr.; mother of his four children, Kimberly Forsyth; daughter, Megan Atkinson; and three sons: David (Lisa), Mitchell III, and Trevor Atkinson; two grandchildren, Josiah and Reyna; one sister, Vaneva Ewell; one brother, Mitchell (Kathy) Atkinson, Jr.; his second wife, Janet Thompson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Willie P. Atkinson; older brother, Joseph Atkinson; older sister, Patricia Sampson, and baby sister, Joyce Ann Atkinson.
