Our school is deeply grateful for the many years of devoted master teaching that Michael provided for our students. Aw man! This is so sad! :-( Who would've though Michael would be called away from us so soon? I was looking forward to knowing him much longer. From the first time I met him nearly 18 years ago, he was always so kind, polite, gentle, and sweet. Every time I was in the same room with him, I could feel his wonderfully disarming presence. My heart goes out to everyone touched by this sad and untimely event, especially dear Nelson. It'll be hard for me to think of the two of them separate now as I've known them to be one and the same for so many years. |

I am deeply saddened by Michael's death. He was a valued colleague and friend. I learned much from him in his care for his students and his brilliance in playing and teaching. He taught me kindness and gentleness and much about playing and teaching the violin. His playing was always enjoyable to experience and led to inspiration for those of us around him.
He will be missed by all of us in the music community, both for his superb musicianship but above all because of his gentle and kind spirit that made us all better musicians and people.

I performed with Michael for nearly ten years in ProMusica and also one summer in the Lancaster Festival. His artistry, warmth, and genuine love for teh art form were always appreciated.

We were shocked and saddened to read of Michael's death. For many years we were admirers of him as a person and musican. We were introduced to him, since a neighbor was his violin student. Most of the years we attended his Cafe Concerts at Shaw's in Lancaster, and we attended many concerts where he was the Concertmaster. I am Marilyn ("Molly") Hood, now living in Upper Arlington, but formerly of Wooster, Ohio. I knew Michael and Eileen when they initially came to the US and Michael was a professor of music at the College of Wooster. As the newswriter in the college public relations department, I wrote many stories about his recitals and performances and enjoyed interviewing him for the stories. He was always a gracious, willing, smiling interviewee, with a special sparkle. I enjoyed hearing his concerts in Columbus and to chat with him when his students were appearing in recitals or competitions. It was a privilege to know him.

Dear Nelson and Family,
I was very saddened to hear of Mr.Davis' passing this morning. What a wonderful and talented man. I had the priviledge of studying with Mr.Davis for 4 years. During the time I lost my father to cancer and changed my major from Music to Anthropology.
Mr.Davis made sure that I was able to continue on with my violin lessons, which I looked forward to every week. His patience and sense of humor sustained me through difficult times.
I will always smile when I think of Mr. Davis' reaction to shoulder pads (the style of the day). He would ask when doing a diagnostic on my stance with the violin, "Are you hunching up your right shoulder or is it that shoulder pad again?"
Mr.Davis will always hold a special place in his students hearts and will be missed greatly.

Michael made this world a better place. He made our lives more beautiful, more compassionate, more at-ease, more insightful, more aspiring. Knowing he is no longer here with us makes me feel a little lost. He was such an amazing teacher, mentor, and resource. No one will ever replace him. When he worked with my students, he would say something like "teaching these young ones brings out a sort of grandfatherly side of me..." He always wanted me to email him pictures of my kids... As amazing as his talent was, and as busy as he was, he truly cared for people and took time for them. I find myself using his phrases all the time in my own teaching. He has forever changed my playing, my teaching, and my life, as he has for countless others, I'm sure. Part of him lives on in each of us.

You can always tell, in Columbus, who had been a student of Michael Davis by their superior tone and impeccable technique. Because of this, I wanted to be your student so badly and I begged you every time I saw you at OSU for the best part of a semester and you finally agreed- even though you were too busy already. You took the time to teach me even though I wasn't a performance major; I am forever in your debt- you helped me realize potential I never knew I had.
I remember you to be one of the most kind, generous men I ever met. Because of your impact on my life, I have spent the last 9 years of my own teaching career trying to care for my violin students the way you did for me.
One of my fondest memories of OSU was being on stage with you during your performance of Beethoven's violin concerto...It sent chills up my spine how beautifully you played and to this day, you own that song in my mind- it was a defining moment in my life that such music could be made. You motivate and inspire me still.
You were a remarkable man and teacher. Every time I have played my violin since your passing, I feel an unfair balance in our world. You are greatly missed, but you will never be forgotten.
