Graveside services for J.D. Hairston, age 93, of Tyler, are scheduled for Monday, October 13, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Rose Hill Cemetery with Dr. Stuart Baskin officiating. Services are under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Hairston died at home in Tyler on October 10, 2008.
J.D. Hairston was born on October 31, 1914 in Tyler to Elba Johnston Hairston and Pat Hairston. He lived in Tyler most of his life attending public schools and graduating from Tyler High School. He also attended Tyler Commercial College.
Mr. Hairston served in the United States Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He remained in the Army Reserve, was recalled to active duty, and served as a Company Commander in Transportation Corps during the Korean Conflict. After serving in Korea, he was released from active duty as a Captain.
After a brief stint in the insurance business, J.D. worked for Gulf Oil Corporation from 1936 to 1973 principally in Kilgore but also in Houston and Beaumont. From 1973 to 1983 he was manager of Harvey Hall in Tyler. After retiring from Harvey Hall, he continued to stay active and worked as an oil well pumper until he was 90 years old. He was a long time member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Tyler.
J.D. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Dixie Kay Hairston. He is survived by their son, James Denny Hairston, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Lillard Hairston of Tyler; three granddaughters and two great granddaughters: Dee Dee Hairston Patterson and husband Bob and daughter Emily Longoria; Barbara Hairston Haslett and daughter Anna Haslett, all of Tyler; and Katie Hairston Kennedy and husband Chuck of Houston.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2008 from 5:00 – 6:30 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler.
