A Memorial Service for Charles Clayton Rutledge, 77 of Emerald Bay, in Bullard, Texas, will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 10:00 am at Emerald Bay Community Church with Rev. Jay Riley and Rev. Charles Vernon Scheffe officiating.
Burial will be at Walker Memorial Gardens in Jasper, Alabama on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be at Kilgore Green Funeral Home in Jasper from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to burial.
Mr. Charles Rutledge passed away, Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.
He was born July 19, 1931 in Hillard, Alabama near Jasper to Paul Hobson Rutledge and Cora Blackwell Rutledge. He spent his youth near Oakman Alabama.
He was a graduate of Oakman High School class of 1949. He then served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was assigned in Korea to the 10th Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division.
Mr. Rutledge then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Samford University. He was employed for over 3o years with United States Gypsum where he served in several management positions in the Southeast and Midwest.
He was a member of Emerald Bay Community Church and a former member of the Southern Baptist church for over 50 years. He was an ordained deacon and held many leadership positions in the several churches of which he was a member. Mr. Rutledge was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, VFW and the American Legion. His hobbies after retirement were golf, fishing and reading.
Mr. Rutledge was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 35 years, Annette Jackson Rutledge; sister Willodean Rutledge Owens and husband James L. Owens; and brother James Edward Rutledge.
Mr. Rutledge is survived by his loving family including his wife Gloria A. Rutledge of Emerald Bay, Bullard, Texas; two daughters, Lynda R. Vaughan and husband Charles, of Houston, and Joy R. Broadway and husband Chip of Richmond, Virginia; granddaughter Lindsay Grace Vaughan; five grandsons, Joshua Vaughan, Clay Vaughan, Hunter Vaughan, Jacob Broadway and Luke Broadway; stepsons Mike Shirley and wife Robin of Edmond, Oklahoma and Mark Shirley and wife Sherry of St. Joseph, Missouri; stepdaughters Marilyn Shirley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Michelle Scheffe and husband Greg of Edmond, Oklahoma; step granddaughters, Katherine and Hanna Shirley and Annie Scheffe; step grandsons Charles and Andrew Scheffe; brother John Paul Rutledge and wife Betty of Oakman, Alabama; and sister-in-law Marie O’Rear Rutledge of Oakman, Alabama.
Mr. Rutledge, wanting to leave a legacy for his children and grandchildren wrote his life story, “…And Now the Good Life.” It is about more than his life on earth, but the good life that he will spend in eternity with his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and step grandsons.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Golden Tee’s of Emerald Bay.
Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, February 23, 2009 at Stewart Family Funeral Home 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler, Texas 75703.
