Services for Elva Irene Greene, 100, of Tyler, will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Greene and Rev. Don Spradling officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Greene went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 1, 2010 in Tyler.
She was born March 9, 1910 in Mankato, Kansas to Verda Price McCorkle and William W. McCorkle and was the granddaughter of a Civil War Veteran. She attended public schools in Kansas, Missouri, and California. She lost her mother at age 11 and cared for her brothers, Jerry and Floyd, and sisters, Evelyn and Edythe, until her marriage. Her family later moved to California where she completed her higher education at the LIEE Bible Institute in Los Angeles.
She married Rev. Bynum L. Greene and they were married for 71 years at the time of his death. Rev. and Mrs. Greene were in the evangelistic and pastoral ministry over 60 years, first as Evangelist and then Pastor in Enid, Oklahoma. They also served at the Cathedral of the Pines Church in Beaumont, Texas and at the First Assembly of God in Tyler for 30 years. The Greenes travelled extensively in Canada and 48 states as well as a trip around the world in 1973.
Mrs. Greene was an exceptional homemaker and loved interior decorating, antiques, and sewing. She especially loved her family and many friends including her very helpful friend, Marquita Hammons.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a loving family including her daughter, Renee Alsup; two grandchildren, Jeffery Bynum Hammond and wife, Anna, and Lisa Marie Edwards and husband, Kenneth; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Brooklyn and Megan Edwards, all of Tyler; two nephews in California, and other extended families.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Hammond, Bill Dean, Kenneth Edwards, Terry Harris, Fred Freeman, Tommy Wyatt, Joe Wyatt, Raymond Odom, and Bobby Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be ministers of the Tyler District Assembly of God.
Visitation is scheduled from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.
