Lonnie James Taylor Sr., born April 19, 1924 to the late Lonnie Buford and Ethel Theo Kelley Taylor in Madison, Florida passed away Saturday January 19, 2008. Mr. Taylor served as an Aerial Gunner flying in A20s in the Army Air Corp (410th Bomb Group Squadron 647th Division). His airplane was shot down over Germany and served as a POW in Mooseburg. He received the Air Medal and a Good Conduct medal and was honorably discharged. Mr. Taylor graduated valedictorian of his class from St. George High School, St. George, Georgia. He later graduated from Jones Business College and went to work for Great Southern Trucking Company in 1947. He remained with the company through many merges and retired from Ryder Truck Lines in 1985.
Mr. Taylor was an active member of Arlington Baptist Church from 1949-1986. His family then joined First Baptist Church of Macclenny in 1986 where he continued to serve on numerous committees until his death. He was involved with the Florida Baptist Home for Children as a Trustee and also with the State Mission Committee. One of his greatest enjoyments was watching sports with his family. Mr. Taylor was an avid fan of the Florida Gators, Jaguar Football, and the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Inez Sands Taylor; daughter: Sandra Louise Taylor of Macclenny; son: Lonnie James Taylor, Jr. (Lori) of Powder Springs, Georgia; granddaughters: Jennifer (Tim) Delapaz of Jacksonville, Carrie (Doug) Cooley of Orange Park, Brooke and Daryn Taylor of Powder Springs, Georgia; great grandson: Brayden Delapaz of Jacksonville; Sisters: Mary (Grover) Brannon and Myrtice (Ben) Walker of Glen St. Mary, Florida; Aunt Bernice Brown of Madison, Florida and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 22, 2008 at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church of Macclenny with Pastors Edsel Bone, John Montgomery and Ray Mckendree officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery with full military rites. The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday January 21, 2008 from 6-8pm at the church.
