Fraser- Gary Kent Fraser, age 68, passed away suddenly on December 29, 2010 at the hospital that was named in memoriam for his late father, Senator Edwin G. Fraser. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on February 6, 1942 to Edwin and Jackie Walters Fraser. After graduating from Baker County High School, Gary attended the University of Florida for a short time where he returned to manage the family business, Southern States Nurseries, Inc. for the entirety of his life. Gary was a true patriarch of his family where all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren could be advised about their daily affairs, which was usually conducted over a cup of coffee or a glass of tea at his kitchen table. Gary will be long remembered for his chicken purleau, lima beans, greens and fried fish.
Gary was appointed interim sheriff in the early 1970’s by Governor Rueben Askew for a six month term, was elected to Macclenny City Council, member of the Florida Nurserymen Growers Association and had in the past completed all the rights pertaining to a Master mason, Scottish Rights Mason and a Shriner of the Moroccan Temple. Gary enjoyed fishing of all kinds especially jigger fishing the old timey way.
Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years: Myra Janice Taylor Fraser; his son: Ryan Taylor (Debbie) Fraser; his daughters: Jessalyn Valerie (Keith) Thrift and Melissa Gari (Larry) Long; his sister: Sandra J. (Gerald) Anderson; his grandchildren: J. Garret (Anise) Bennett, Amanda Bennett, Jamey E. (Sarah) Thrift, Gardner “Gar” Kent Fraser, Nathan Fraser (Brittany) Thrift, Taylor Breann Fraser, Rachel Denise Long and Rebekah Alise Long; his great grandchildren: Grayson Bufort Fraser Thrift and Kinley Brooke Thrift.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 11:00 am at Christian Fellowship Temple in Macclenny, FL with Pastor Henry Cribb officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Macclenny, FL. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 31, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the church.
