Richard "Dick" Hanson, age 81, of Edwardsville, died at 11:23 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born on June 16, 1924, in Rhinelander, Wis., the son of the late Andrew and Sophia Harwat Hanson. He married Martha Ann Hughes on June 5, 1954, at the First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville. She survives. Also surviving are two sons: Richard Ted“ Hanson of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Dr. Thomas Hanson and wife, Shari of Daphne, Ala.; four grandchildren: Meredith, Dirk, Richard and Thomas Hanson; and a sister: Martha Traeger of Milwaukee, Wis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Dr. Edward, Alex and Herbert Hanson; and a sister: Lois Zimmerle. Mr. Hanson was employed as a district manager for R.W. Hunt Co. for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on LST 131 during the invasions of Saipain in June 1944, Tinian of the Marianas Islands and Peleliu in September 1944, and the invasion of the Palau Islands in the
South Pacific. On Feb. 23, 1971, he was awarded a U.S. Patent for a sheer connector, patent 3564799. His memberships included the First Presbyterian Church of Edwardsville, an Edwardsville Little League manager and treasurer, a Boy Scout master, and the American Legion Post 199 in Edwardsville. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at Weber Funeral Home in Edwardsville. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville with Dr. John Hembruch, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
